History about Dean:
American bass-baritone Dean Peterson might have been born to sing the operas of Carlisle Floyd. Like Floyd, he was the son of a minister and grew up in the south, first in a small town on the Gulf Coast of Texas and then in Florida.

"Eventually I moved to a lovely, little fishing community in Florida. I am really comfortable in a small-town atmosphere. I met a guy there named Carlos Barrena, a tenor who had escaped from Cuba and had a career in Europe. He had returned to the United States and started an opera company. I have no idea how I got caught up in it. I was country and western at that time! But, the next thing I knew, I was on the stage in the chorus for Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. And I just fell in love. I knew at that moment I wanted to have opera in my life.

"Opera gives people a couple of hours to literally separate themselves from whatever is going on outside the theater door and perhaps gives them some emotional rest or at least springs them back emotionally from whatever was going on in their day. In our business world today we get so caught up with what we have to do, we forget to enjoy sometimes. I think that our job as singers and musicians is to remember that quality of music that can reach out and change people. That is our responsibility.
